Just about every weekend during the fall is spent watching sports. Whether we are tailgating at the stadium before a game or chilling in the theater area of our basement, it is all sports all the time. Of course, no sports watching is complete without the perfect munchies to enjoy. Mini chili cheese dogs are the absolutely perfect little small bite for any of your sport watching events.

Mini Chili Cheese Dogs

What is a chili dog?

A chili dog is a combination of a hot dog topped with chili and served in a bun. When made miniature, you can either find small buns or wrap them like I’ve done here. Of course, everything is better with cheese so I turned the classic chili dog into a chili cheese dog.

Ingredients for Mini Chili Dogs:

  • Puff Pastry – You’ll want to partially thaw the puff pastry so it is easier to work with.
  • Mini hot dogs or sausages – I typically use beef lil smokies but you can choose your favorites. You could also cut full sized hot dogs into bite sized pieces.
  • Shredded cheese – This recipe calls for classic cheddar but you can substitute with your favorite cheese. Shredded pepper jack would be a good option to add a little bit of spice.
  • Hot dog chili – I buy hot dog chili sauce from the grocery store. You can make your own too.
  • Egg – This recipe needs a single large egg to create an egg wash that is brushed onto the puff pastry. The egg wash helps the pastry brown.

What to Serve with Mini Chili Cheese Dogs:

You can easily pair these mini dogs with yummy dips or even basic ketchup and mustard. I’m partial to a ranch dip so that is always available in our house. Other options include side dishes like a classic potato or macaroni salad.

How to Make Chili Cheese Dogs:

  • Preheat the oven and prepare your baking pan. You can use the preheating time to prep the other items.
  • Prepare the puff pastry. You’ll want to smooth out the puff pastry but you don’t need to make it any thinner. You’ll cut into strip that will be used to roll around the mini hot dogs.
  • Put everything together. Each puff pastry piece gets some chili, cheese, and then a mini hot dog all rolled up.
  • Brush the puff pastry bites with the egg wash and bake. The egg wash is a crucial step because that’s how you’ll get the perfectly browned pastry.

Recipe Variations:

Full sized chili cheese dogs. You can make this recipe using full sized hot dogs. Simply cut the puff pastry into large pieces and substitute the mini hot dogs for full sized ones.

Change the Cheese. Substitute the shredded cheddar with your favorite cheese. You could also use a cheese spread instead of shredded cheese.

Make it Spicy. Mix chopped jalapenos into the chili or add jalapeno slices on top before baking.
