This spiced hot Aperol cocktail is the perfect winter replacement for anyone who loves Aperol Spritz! It warm you right up on the cold, winter months.
During our recent trip to Europe to visit ALL the Christmas markets, I feel in love with hot Aperol that was being served at one of the Gluhwein stalls. Serve it with an orange slice and a cinnamon stick for the perfect winter cocktail.
Why You’ll Love This Hot Aperol Wine Recipe:
- It tastes like Christmas in a glass! With a mix of spices, citrus flavors, wine, and Aperol, you’ll feel like you are sipping your hot winter cocktail in a Christmas market instead of on your couch.
- It is very easy to make! No need for a cocktail shaker or fancy glasses.
- Make it ahead! You can make this ahead of time and then warm it up when you want to drink it.
- Balanced flavors. A little sweet, a little bitter, and perfectly spiced.
Ingredients for a Hot Aperol Wine Recipe:
- Aperol – This is the key ingredient and one you should always have on your bar cart. With its classic bitter flavor, it pairs so well with the spices and citrus. I do not recommend substituting with Campari because of the increased bitterness that Campari has over Aperol.
- White Gluhwein – I love using my mulled white wine in this recipe. If you don’t want to spend the time to make it (I usually keep a bottle in our fridge and heat it up as I want), substitute with a dry, white wine like a German Riesling or a Pinot Grigio.
- Apple Juice – I typically go for an unsweetened apple juice here. If you use a sweetened version, be sure to adjust the honey.
- Honey – Start with 2 tablespoons of honey, but taste before serving. If you prefer a sweeter drink, add more honey gradually, stirring well to dissolve.
- Oranges – Use fresh oranges for the best results.
- Cinnamon Sticks – These provide the perfect amount of wintery spice into the drink.
As I mentioned before, this cocktail is so easy to make! With only one pot and under 20 minutes, you have the perfect drink to enjoy all winter long.
If you want to turn this into a hot Aperol spritz, you could top it with a little prosecco or club soda for a little bit of a fizz.

Ingredients
- 1 cup Aperol
- 2 cups white Glühwein or dry white wine
- 1 cup apple juice
- 2 tablespoons honey
- 1 orange, thinly sliced
- 2 cinnamon sticks
Instructions
- In a medium pot, combine the Aperol, prepared white Glühwein, apple juice, honey, orange slices, and cinnamon sticks. Stir to dissolve the honey.
- Heat the mixture over low heat, ensuring it doesn’t boil, to preserve the Aperol's flavor. Let it warm for about 10 minutes, allowing the flavors to meld.
- Taste the mixture and add more honey if desired for extra sweetness.
- Pour the hot Aperol cocktail into heat-safe glasses or mugs, straining out the orange slices and cinnamon sticks.
- Add an orange slice or a cinnamon stick to each glass for garnish.
Notes
- Start with 2 tablespoons of honey, but taste before serving. If you prefer a sweeter drink, add more honey gradually, stirring well to dissolve.
- Aperol has a bittersweet flavor, so balance it with the sweetness of the honey and apple juice. Avoid substituting with Campari as it’s significantly more bitter.
- Aperol’s delicate flavors can become muted or overly bitter if boiled. Keep the heat low and simmer gently to preserve its unique taste.
- Use mugs or glasses that can withstand heat to avoid cracks or discomfort while drinking.
- Prepare the cocktail ahead of time and store it in the refrigerator. When ready to serve, gently reheat on low heat, ensuring it doesn’t boil.
