Project Organization – The Craft Room

January 15, 2013 By Shannah 28 Comments

Part of our basement plan included a fantastic little craft space for me.   It quickly turned into a mound of craft supplies and other junk shoved behind two doors for the holidays.

Now that the new year is here, I was determined to get it organized so that I could do some crafting or blogging in there!  I started with some Elfa supplies that we inherited from Andrew’s late aunt.

The Mathlete used those to hang some shelves me.  Meanwhile, I started going through the piles of stuff and trying to get like items together.

Once I had my stuff in piles, I started putting the piles into plastic storage containers.  First up was the acrylic paints.
I ran into a small issue though because some paint manufacturers put the color on the lid while others {ahem, Martha} don’t.  So, I grabbed some q-tips and proceeded to make my own paint dots on the lids.
For MS paints, you can just use the little seal from the inside whenever you open them.  The result is the same.

Once I had everything in containers, I just added them to the shelves and put labels on them.
I can actually get to the little desk to sit down and work.
The labels are all from Martha Stewart and I did a combination of chalkboard labels and little brown kraft paper labels.

For smaller items, I had some of these little bins from Target hanging around that I put on a shelf too.

The top of the paper cart holds some more small items too

Now, I can find just about anything I need AND get into the craft room to actually make something.

What have you been organizing this new year?  Have any tips on keeping craft supplies organized?

I just finished creating a craft wall! Thank goodness for cute storage baskets from, wait for it…. Dollar Tree! I still have to figure out labels. I want something like a metal bordered tag.

Oh my, you really had your hands full! But looking at these pics I am determined that I can do it too. I have piles of fabric that need to be organized, and I can’t seem to find the motivation. You did an amazing job though, I love see through boxes!

I just found your blog, but I’ll definitely come back. 🙂

I couldn’t believe all of the stuff that had been shoved into that room! There was a lot more that didn’t show in the “before” pictures. Thankfully, it is organized now so I can find things. You can definitely do it!

This looks so good! I am a student living in a small room so my craft supplies are limited and take up every available space – I cannot wait to get a place of my own so I can have a space like this! I love the labels you used on your boxes too!

I am seriously jealous of that craft space and the organization there! I get so frustrated that I ended up scrapping my crafty projects lately because my space is such a disaster. It’s next on my list of things to tackle!

Hi Shannah! I’m visiting over from Wildly Original. I really LOVE what you did with your little craft area. I have one myself that looks a lot like your “before” pictures…thankfully it’s behind closed doors! Your acrylic paints look so neat and organized. I love your idea of putting the paint color on top. That’s one of those “Duh” things….why didn’t I think of that? Love the containers, the labels, your desk, everything! You did a great job! Doesn’t it feel good? I’ll bet you love being in there now. I know I would. So glad you shared!
