H’s Room Update: Upcycled Paper Tray

July 22, 2013 By Shannah 17 Comments

Surgery put the brakes on changing H’s room to a bigger girl room but we are slowly moving forward.  While I was resting comfortably with my pain meds and my knee propped up, painters came and changed her room from pink to a gorgeous citron green {selected by H herself}.  Then, once I could move around a little bit, I took on a smaller project and upcycled a paper tray.

H is always drawing, coloring and collecting notes so I wanted to make sure she had a place to keep all of those things in her new room.  I started with a plain tray from Target.

upcycled paper tray failureNo matter how gently I pulled or how much I scored prior to pulling the tape, it just kept pulling the paint off.  Insert super sad face right here.
H has some scrapbook paper that she has been begging to use in her room and, since this project was already a major failure, we decided to try it in the bottom of the paper tray.

Mod Podge to the rescue.  We use the mod podge to keep the paper secure and finished painting the sides the orange color we chose.

Have you had any major craft failures recently?  How did you turn them around?

Thanks! I thought it was great to add a fun pop of color to her room and give her a place to keep her papers.

Thanks! I thought it was super fun and was so easy (once I got over the craft fail). Just picked up the kraft paper pen cup at target so I will be trying my hand at that now 🙂

This tray is great! I love covering things with paper. I just recently made a desk set for work by covering boxes of various sizes.
I would love if you shared this at the Krafty Inspiration party over at Krafty Cards etc.
    Have a great weekend!

Thanks! I don’t use paper like this in near enough projects! I bet your desk set turned out really cute.

Thanks! I was so frustrated when the tape kept pulling off the paint. I almost just stopped the entire project.
