Summer Snacking with #EverydayDairy

June 10, 2013 By Shannah 4 Comments

Collective Bias Disclosure

Summer is here!  The kids are out of school and spending a lot more time at home.  Of course, when they are home, I hear “I’m hungry” pretty much every 20 minutes or so.  Summer snacking is a little different than our traditional snacks though because of the hot weather.  I tend to worry that the kids won’t get enough of the vitamins and minerals they should because our dairy intake tends to be much lower.

So, I set out to come up with some new snack choices that incorporated dairy but would still be perfect on a hot summer day.
Diary Ideas with label

I visited Safeway after a doctor’s appointment recently and grabbed  a few items that I knew would help us make smart snacking choices.  They have a great deal going on right now where you can save $5 when you spend $15 or more on specified Everyday Dairy products.  You can see a lot of the options I found during my shopping trip in my Google+ album.

Wildberry Smoothie
Mornings are crazy busy for us but I like to make sure that our kids have something at least semi-healthy to start the day.  Our smoothies always have
– 1 cup of frozen wildberries
– 1/4 cup of Simply Orange orange juice with calcium
– 1/2 cup of lowfat yogurt
– 1 banana
I just blend it all together and let the kids drink it up!

Turkey and Cheese Roll-ups
When we get home from work/daycare, they kids are always looking for something more substantial than goldfish or chips.  I started  having them wrap turkey and cheese into little roll-ups and have those for a quick snack.  The kids love getting involved and I am happy that they are getting some important health benefits.

Klondike Bars
Of course, we all deserve a little treat now and then.  Our favorite treats always involve ice cream.  One of our favorites are Klondike bars…they are such a great combination of chocolate and vanilla ice cream.

What are some of the snacks you choose to make sure your kids are snacking healthy during the summer?  Is ice cream your go-to summer treat?

While the Klondike would be my favorite, those turkey roll ups look like fun! What a great idea!

That berry smoothie is a HUGE hit in our house. I get requests for it at least once every other day.
