Interchangeable Lanterns for Fall

September 17, 2012 By Shannah 24 Comments

Fall is in the air on my mind.

The ArtsyGirl Connection

It is, sadly, not quite in the air since we are having a spurt of 90 degree temperatures recently. A girl can dream of cooler temperatures and changing leaves though, right?  This year, fall starts right at my doorstep with these lanterns.

I really consider these Ikea lanterns, some white candles and ribbon to be the core of my interchangeable front stoop décor.

Let me show you what I mean.

During early fall, I still like bright colors but want the lanterns to match what is going on with the planters on the front porch too. During September, I typically switch out the geraniums for mums.

On my last trip to Michaels, I picked up some artificial flowers that looked like mums. Randomly, I chose purpose and yellow. When I got home, I grabbed some ribbon and measured it to fit around my candles.

The type of ribbon doesn’t really matter because it doesn’t show much. I picked a random plaid and just used the backside. Once it was measured, I grabbed my hot glue gun and glued the flower heads onto the ribbon.

I attached the ribbon to the candle using two straight pins and I was done.

In a few weeks, I’ll probably get tired of the flowers and want to switch it out again. No problem!
I also grabbed this garland and can easily encircle the candle with it in the lantern.

Or, I could use this pumpkin ribbon I started {but admittedly didn’t finish at the time}.

For Halloween, I’ll probably bring back my owl decorations from last year and maybe just make a few tweaks.

Once Halloween is over, but before I am ready for Christmas décor, I’ll probably just throw the plain candle in there with some of these cute little pumpkins.

So, there you have it. I’ve decorated my front porch steps from now until Thanksgiving with 4 Ikea lanterns (2 in each size), some candles, ribbon and a few small additions.

Have you started decorating for fall? Do you use interchangeable items to make decorating easy?

So cute! I love the lanterns, and the purple and gold flowers are prefect early fall colors. Who would have thought the lanterns would be so versatile?
