Handmade Charlotte Stencils – A Stenciled Step Stool

March 22, 2013 By Shannah 21 Comments

I have this boring old white step stool that lives in our powder room.  The kids use it to stand on when they wash their hands in the sink.  I wanted to give it a little upgrade and thought stenciling it would be a perfect way to do that.  I received a set of Handmade Charlotte stencils and I decided to try them out on this project.

I started with just the plain white stool and cleaned it really well.  I wiped it down with some liquid deglosser to help my paint stick better.
DSC_5409DSC_5410The Handmade Charlotte stencils are a really thick cardboard and you simply punch out the little pieces.  The package came with eight stencils and I definitely had a touch time deciding which one to use.  I finally chose one with graphics composed of small triangles.
DSC_5411DSC_5412I grabbed my other supplies:  FolkArt acylic paint and my foam stampers.  I always pour my paint into a little plastic container to make it easy to work from.  The little foam stampers are my favorite tools for stenciling.
DSC_5414When working with the sponges, always be sure that you don’t have too much paint on the end of the brush or stamper or you’ll end up with a lot of bleeding under your stencil.  I keep a paper towel with me and off load the extra paint onto it.
PicMonkey CollageI placed my stencil where I wanted to start and began stenciling.  Each time I needed to move the stencil, I just lined up one of the rows on top of an existing part of my painted area.  When stenciling, it is important to remember to tap up and down and not brush side to side.
DSC_5412DSC_5420I stenciled all the way across the top of my step stool.  Then, I painted the front part in the same color green.
DSC_5430DSC_5425The stencils were awesome to work with and I am so happy with how the little stool came out.  You can find the Handmade Charlotte stencils at select JoAnn stores and on JoAnn.com {more craft stores will have them soon}!

This stool turned out great! I really need to start using stencils for more projects. I always love how simple they are to use and how great the finished project looks. Also, wanted to stop by and say thanks for stopping by my blog and for your sweet comment on my framed bunny!

Step stools are essential for little kids! My kids are older but we still have a step stool in our bathroom for kids that come to visit!
