Comfort Food Made Easy: Grilled Ham and Cheese

July 3, 2013 By Shannah 9 Comments

I’m a Southern girl by birth.  Comfort food for me is fried chicken, mashed potatoes and chocolate cake.  All that stuff takes forever {and a lot of work} to make the “right” way.  While I was away in Utah, we visited a place called Melt Away and the delicious grilled cheese there definitely helped erase my home sickness/missing my family.

Comfort food in a sandwich is a novel idea for me but I decided to try and recreate recipe so I had an easy go to at home.

A grilled cheese is an easy sandwich to make.  H always begs for them with american cheese.  The grilled cheese at Melt Away were definitely more of a “adult” sandwich though.

What You’ll Need:
– 2 slices of bread {pick a good one!}
– 2 slices deli ham
– 2 slices pepperjack cheese
– 2 slices baby swiss cheese
– butter
– 2 tsp pineapple jam

Let’s Make It:
1)  Spread light layer of butter on the outside of each bread slice.

2)  Layer your sandwich as follows:
– bread slice
– Swiss cheese slice
– slice of pepperjack cheese
– slice of ham
– pineapple jam
– slice of ham
– slice of pepper jack cheese
– slice of Swiss cheese
– bread slice

3)  Heat pan over medium-low heat and add sandwich.  Cook for 3-4 minutes {or until golden brown} and turnover.  Cook an additional 2-3 minutes or until golden brown.

It may look like a simple sandwich but it has BIG flavor.

What is your favorite comfort food?  Is grilled cheese a favorite in your house?

The pineapple jam was so good. I love ham and pineapple together so I was looking for ways to combine them outside of the traditional pizza. Thanks for stopping by.

The idea for the pineapple came from my visit to a place called Meltaway in Utah. It was so good that I knew I just had to try it at home.

I am a huge sandwich fan! My favorite right now is roasted veggies, roast beef and goat cheese. I’ll be sharing here soon 🙂
