A Glimpse: Rainy Day Games

Our summer weather has been amazing. Beautiful days have kept us outside playing all the time and we rarely hear “I’m bored.” That all changed during a streak of rainy days and we were left wondering what to do to keep the kids entertained. I like to avoid TV and iPad time as much as possible so I started thinking of rainy day games we could play. The first one we tried: Q’s Race to the Top.

Q’s Race to the Top is a super cute game that focuses on a monkey names Q. In addition to just being a fun board game, the game focuses on helping kids practice emotional intelligence through the questions and also the book that comes with it.

We set up our game at the kitchen table and I grabbed a few a snacks to have while we played.

We each chose which color monkey we wanted to be and rolled the dice to get started.

The game is simple: roll the dice and move your monkey that number of spaces. The color you land on is what color card you choose. Each of the cards has a different question or action you need to read/do.

The question cards are great ways to get your kids talking and help them expand their emotional intelligence…basically, you are helping them learn about self control, motivation, empathy and other social skills while playing a super fun game. It is learning without realizing they are learning 😉

In addition to the question cards, there are also physical cards which are super fun. I know H had a great time watching her mom and dad try to tackle some of the physical challenges!

Mathlete ended up winning the game by reaching the top first! H wasn’t far behind though…I came in dead last. The game was so fun because a) it helped us forget about the dreary day and b) it gave us some great family time together!

What do you do for rainy day fun? Do you have a family game night? Be sure to check out the Kickstarter campaign for Qs Race to the Top to learn more about this awesome game and support EQ Entertainment’s goal to help kids increase their EQ through play.
