Homemade Chocolate Syrup Recipe

November 24, 2015 By Trina Miner Leave a Comment

Have I mentioned that my husband is a marathon runner?

He probably wouldn’t tell you himself unless it came up in conversation. He is too humble for that. This accomplishment is one of the many things that I love about him.

His reason for running….

“…because I can”.

When you ask if I will be joining him in this personal journey of new distances and times beat, my reply will be…

“I only run for chocolate”.

And, I will always join my Mr. Marathon for an after run snack.

According to runners, drinking chocolate milk and eating a banana after a run is really good for you.

Seriously.

It helps replenish the nourishment that the body has lost during the run.

Maybe I should rethink my stance on not running?

Nah…

So in order to make his after run drink healthier, I made a few Miner adjustments and got my Great Grandma Helen’s Chocolate syrup out…there isn’t any high fructose corn syrup in it like the national brands.

Once you make this, you will never store bought chocolate syrup again.  I promise my husband’s runners high on it!

Great Grandma Helen’s Chocolate Syrup Recipe

Ingredients:
  • ½ cup Cocoa Powder
  • 1 cup cold water
  • 2 cups sugar
  • 2 teaspoons vanilla
  • A small palm full of salt {small}

Directions:

{One}
Use a tall pan and put in the cocoa powder and cold water
Stir over direct medium heat until cocoa is dissolved

{Two}
Add 2 cups of sugar

{Three}
Bring to a rolling boil and let it continue to boil for 5 minutes and continually stir.

{It will rise to the top of the pan while boiling. Take it off the heat if needed until it goes down and then return it to the heat. I had to do this many times.}

{Four}
Take pan off heat after 5 minutes of boiling and add salt and vanilla.

Store in the refrigerator.

*If it is stored for a long period of time the syrup may need to be dissolved again before using. Pop it in the microwave for 30 seconds and stir. Repeat as needed.

 The syrup thickens when straight out of the fridge. It was still warm when I took this picture. This syrup is amazing in milk, but it is doubly amazing on frozen yogurt.I will leave the running to my husband.

The chocolate syrup…that’s all me!
