Sure…the answer should be content.
In reality, the answer is pictures! Pictures are what capture a reader’s attention and makes them actually read your content.
Now, you all know that I am, at best, an amateur photographer. Mathlete tends to do the photography on a lot of our projects because he has some training compared to my complete lack of training.
You’ll also notice you see a lot of random backdrops to the pictures here…hello patio door.
So, I set out to make my own photo backdrop so you’d see less of my patio door and other random household items.
I picked up some balsam wood panels from Michaels {cue Tori Spelling saying “the arts and crafts store”}
Fitting I am using my couch as a backdrop in a post about backdrops, no? |
I had Lowe’s paint match one of their samples to Benjamin Moore Moonshine {I love BM paints but I happened to be in Lowes and the paint match saved me a trip.}
Two coats onto my panels and they were ready
Mathlete had some extra wood from our basement reno so he cut two pieces for me to secure my panels together with.
I borrowed some wood glue from Rock Boy and glued the pieces of wood to the back of the panels. {No wood glue for a wood project = major DIY fail!}
I put pressure on them using some high-tech tools…pots and pans
All dry the next morning and ready for the spotlight
I love the moonshine’s slight grayish color. And I purposely positioned them so the cracks show
Now I have backdrop for when I finally learn to use the camera the right way 🙂

Nice backdrop! Once I get a better camera, I’ll have to try this. Apparently the weekend was a great time for everyone to catch up on their home projects. I spent all weekend working on a new jewelry organizer.
What a great looking backdrop!
Looks pretty awesome to me! (I’ve been using my fridge!….I really need to stop that!)
Great idea, it looks fantastic. I usually use my workdesk and you can see pots of pens in the background!
It can be tricky to come up with good backdrops, especially if you like to take things outside for good light and then it ends up raining. The non-competing backdrop does provide a nice contrast to the item. Good work!

Beautifully done, nice technique!

Great idea. It really adds something to your pictures.
Nice idea! It gives a neutral background with some interest and is easy and cost effective, too. I’m pinning this for future reference. I found your link at Elizabeth and Company.

I’ve been planning on making some of these backdrops too, when I get the chance. I used to wonder how those food photographers had so many “tabletops”. lol Your backdrop is fabulous!

Love it! So pretty! I even have that paint color. 😉 I only have a large backdrop so this is such a great idea for smaller scale items. Thanks so much for sharing!
Great Idea! It looks like it would be much easier to handle than one of those light boxes and cuter also.

Love, LOVE this! I have been looking for good backdrops for my projects. Sometimes I thumbtack fabric to the wall, but usually my pictures feature random backgrounds and craft supplies that find their way into the shot. Can’t wait for payday to go get some basam wood!
Awesome! I have a hard time finding good backdrops for my blogging photos. Great idea!
