Pinterest Challenge: Making a New Bed

February 25, 2013 By Shannah 13 Comments

Pinterest does a lot of things…the biggest is providing you with endless amounts of inspiration and ideas through your pins!

Thanks, in part to Pinterest, at our last dinner club, some of the ladies got to talking about upholstering headboards. Two, in particular, really wanted to do it for their rooms but just hadn’t made the time.

So, being the “do-er” that I like to think I am {yes, even that made ME laugh out loud, Mathlete…and others}, I scheduled a headboard day. The week before our “headboard day” came and there were lots of emails and texts.  We all wanted super simple rectangular boards similar to this one

On Saturday morning, Liz texted me to find out if I had really gone and bought the wood. {Sorry Liz…I fibbed just a bit. We were in the car on our way to get the wood but I was afraid you might back out if I told you that!} Mathlete and I hit up Lowes and bought the plywood for our projects and had it cut there. I also picked up a second staple gun and a ton of staples in different sizes.

Liz was given batting duty since neither Nari or I had actually gone and bought batting yet. {Maybe we were all subconsciously thinking the other was going to cancel?}

With all of our supplies purchased, we got to work making our 3 headboards {I will warn you…you will see two different fabrics in the how-to pictures because we were making multiple boards}!

House Tour

May 5, 2011 By Shannah Leave a Comment

5.4.2011

Much of my time in the next few months (years!) will be spent trying to make my house a little more “us” and little less builder. So, let’s go on a house tour. This will be very photo heavy because it’s the easiest way to share our floor plan with you!
We had been house hunting for 2 years and stumbled upon this during one of our searches:
It wasn’t in the neighborhood we really wanted to live in but we loved the house. We figured it was only a few miles from our target neighborhood and offered all of the things we were looking for. So, we made an offer and crossed our fingers. Surprisingly, our offer was excepted even though it was on the low side! Hurrah!
Our closing date got moved several times thanks to the investor who had purchased the home but hadn’t done his homework on the reselling part of the transaction. Finally, in March 2010…a full 3 months after our contract was accepted, we took possession.

These pictures are all from our walk-thru the day before closing so you can see how very builder-esque it really is was.
Here is the foyer and stairway from just inside the front door.

From the foyer, looking to the right, is a study/playroom with two French doors.

Moving further into the house (on the right) takes you to the living room and powder room.

The dining room is connected to the living room and separated from it by columns. Hello – shiny brass fixture.

The dining room links to the kitchen/breakfast area. I love how open the kitchen is but really hate the cabinets (more on that later!). There is a sliding glass door that leads into the yard or if there were stairs/patio/deck back there. All they offered for this walk-thru was a look at some very safe wooden boards.

The breakfast area is adjacent to the family room. One of the biggest things I wanted was a two-story  family room so I was so happy that this house offered it. My energy conscious side feels a little guilty about it most days but I try to compensate in other ways.

Upstairs and to the left offers three regular bedrooms, a laundry room and a hall bathroom.

To the right is the master bedroom with sitting room and en suite bathroom.

The backyard is a good size considering the area we live in and is fully fenced. I think it is perfect for the kids to run around and play in. We envision a swing set in one corner in the future.

We’ve lived here just over a year and, honestly, not a whole lot has changed from those pictures. We did painted almost every room and brought in furniture to most of them. I’ll post an “in-progress” house tour later to provide a better reference for all of the (hopefully) upcoming housing projects I want to undertake.
