2014 Word for the Year

January 2, 2014 By Shannah Coe 24 Comments

Happy 2014!  I hope your new year started of fabulously.

Last year, I went about the usual new year way and made a whole bunch of resolutions.  I won’t even begin to pretend I accomplished most of them.  I guess that is the thing about resolutions…they stick around from year to year because we rarely accomplish the goals tied to them.

So, this year, I decided I would change my strategy a little bit and go for a word of the year instead.  My word for the year:
balanceYep, balance.  I know we all talk a lot about trying to achieve balance in our lives when it comes to work and “life.”  I am taking the idea of balance and applying to all aspects of my life in 2014.  Of course, work/life balance is totally key.  I want to ensure that I don’t spend so much time wrapped up in the business of my blog or working at my 9-5 that I miss all the exciting things that happen in our every day life.
l_397bf980-d324-11e1-b466-a9f907600007The things I do outside of working totally provide inspiration for my blog. So, why don’t I step away from the computer or smart phone and do them more?  I will definitely be focusing on doing just that during 2014.  It may mean a few more posts here but it {hopefully} also means that the posts you do get will be more inspiring and better.

Another big place I need is balance is in eating.  I refuse to diet because I know the results are short lived and rarely does anyone stick with a diet.  But, I recognize the need for a much healthier lifestyle too!  I fully recognize that some of my injuries during 2013 could have been much less of an injury had I been in better shape and overall healthier.
healthy-food-versus-unhealthy-foodI know myself though and know that the idea of giving up desserts (like chocolate eclair cake or s’mores) or wine just isn’t going to last very long.  So, instead of seeking to just cut all that stuff out and failing, I am going to look for a better balance of healthier items (like clean eating orange chicken stir fry) and the ones I know I love.  Maybe something closer to 50/50 than the current 80/20 🙂

I’ll try to check in throughout the year and share my progress towards achieving balance.

In the meantime, what is your word of the year?   Or , if you prefer goals/resolutions, share those too! I’d love to hear all about them.

Balance is an excellent way to go into the new year. I don’t have a word, but I’m thinking if I did it would be something like intentional.

Balance is a great word for the new year. Very inspirational, too. We all need it, but we don’t know how to get it!! I am certain following you this year will be both inspirational and balancing for all of us.

Balance. I definitely need to work on that. Balancing work and being a mom, balancing working, being a mom, and trying to lose weight. Work and cleaning the house. Oh there’s plenty to try and work through and find a good routine and schedule and what works for us!

I haven’t done resolutions for years now. I think it’s a really great idea to pick a word instead of all those resolutions. Have to think on my word though 😀

I love your outlook because it is real and honest. I used to be an all or nothing person with NO Balance, but I have been learning to be more successful by doing what you said and trying to get to 50/50.

Balance is such a good goal to have. It is easy to get bogged down in the goals I don’t meet so this year my goal is to the best I can be and be steadfast in whatever I do.

What a strong word that so many of us don’t anything about, ha, ha, ha… I have a tendency to throw myself into things 110% and forget about the basics of life, so this is a great word for me!

That’s a great choice! This is my first year with a little one and I’m going back to work in a week. I’ll need to work hard to balance family, work, my home and my blog (that just sounds exhausting!)

    Great word!
    Mine is Trust.
We have so much going on that right now I need to refocus my attention on the drivel and trust that God will provide. I’m sure balance will sneak in once things settle down.
I’m like you with the 80/20 ratio.

Balance is a great focus word for 2014. I sometimes get so overwhelmed with my new blog venture and get out of tilt with my time. And I am not far behind with my eating habits. My focus word is better. I want to do Better in all aspects of my life to make me the best mom I can be.
